Day 1 Kuching – Nanga Sumpa (L/D)
0800 hours pick up from hotel in Kuching and drive to Batang Ai reservoir. Along the way stop at Lachau Bazaar. Stroll around the shops and the small native market and have an early lunch in a local coffee shop. Then continue your journey, arriving at Batang Ai Lake around 1330-1400 hours. Board a longboat and travel upriver to Nanga Sumpa, arriving at approx. 1530 hours, although the exact time will depend on river conditions. Settle in at Borneo Adventure’s lodge and have dinner. Evening free at leisure. Overnight at Nanga Sumpa lodge.
Day 2 Nanga Sumpa – Mawang Rainforest Camp (B/L/D)
0800 hours - breakfast in Nanga Sumpa Lodge. Approx. 0900 hours, depart Nanga Sumpa and trek for 2-3 hours to Mawang Camp. While the orangutans are only occasionally seen, their nests can usually be observed.Upon arrival, settle in and have lunch at Mawang Camp. After lunch go trekking on one of the trails to search for orangutans and their nests. Return to campand have dinner. Overnight at Mawang Camp.
Day 3 Mawang Rainforest Camp (B/L/D)
Approx. 0700 hours, have breakfast in the camp. Then depart on a trek on one of the trails near the camp to search for orangutans. Return to camp for lunch. Late afternoon
Day 4 Mawang Rainforest Camp (B/L/D)
Breakfast in camp. Then trek from Sungai Mawang to Nanga Sumpa (about 2-3 hours). Search for wild orangutans and other wildlife before arriving at Nanga Sumpa on the Delok River. Settle in at Borneo Adventure’s lodge and have lunch. Afternoon go on a circular trek in the Nanga Sumpa area through primary and secondary forest that is known orangutan habitat. Alternatively take a boat upriver to Enseluai Waterfall for a swim. Return to lodge for dinner. After dinner proceed to the longhouse across the river. Spend some time “berandau”
(talking) with the longhouse people before retiring for the night. Overnight at
Nanga Sumpa Lodge.
Day 5 Nanga Sumpa – Kuching (B/L)
Breakfast in the lodge. Then free at leisure to relax, swim in the river or take some photos around Nanga Sumpa. At 1115 hours have an early lunch in the lodge. Depart around 1200 hours and travel downriver to the Batang Ai Lake jetty, arriving approx. 1330 hours. Then travel overland back to Kuching. Arrive in Kuching approx. 1830 hours and be dropped off at your hotel.
(Leeches are found in the forest along the Red Ape Trail. Insect repellent is effective against leeches.)
