Day 1   Sandakan –  Telupid – Imbak Canyon Conservation Area (D)

The Imbak Canyon Conservation Area (ICCA) covers 30,000 hectares of  pristine rainforest renowned for its rich biodiversity. This wilderness  area is a sanctuary for a wide range of wildlife including iconic  species such pygmy elephants, orangutan and gibbons plus over 250  species of birds. The tour programme includes a mix of jungle treks,  night walks and four-wheel drive safaris to allow you to experience the  rainforest and search for wildlife.

Pickup from the airport or your hotel in Sandakan and begin your journey to Imbak Canyon Conservation Area. The first stretch of the way takes around 2 hours on sealed roads to the town of Telupid. 1230 hours transfer to four wheel drive vehicles for the rest of the journey which takes 2-3 hours, depending on weather and road conditions. Arrive at the Imbak Canyon Studies Centre (ICSC) around 1500-1530 hours and check in to your room. 1630 hours go on short walk near the HQ in search of animals and birdlife. Have dinner at 1900 hours. After dinner depart for a 90-minute night walk through the rainforest to search for nocturnal wildlife. Overnight at Imbak Canyon Studies Centre (deluxe resthouse room).

Day 2   Imbak Canyon – Kuli Camp (B/L/D)

After breakfast board your four-wheel drive for a short drive to the access point for today’s trek. Then begin your walk along a dirt track to Kuli Camp. The terrain is mostly flat and the trek should take 2-3 hours although the duration will depend on the wildlife you encounter along the way. Various species of hornbill are often seen along this track. Arrive at the camp around noon and have lunch. In the afternoon go on a walk to explore the rainforest near the camp. 1800 hours enjoy dinner in the camp. After dinner go on a 1-2 hour night walk to search for wildlife. Return to the camp and sleep on stretcher hammocks deep in the heart of the rainforest. Overnight at Kuli research camp.

(Note: The overnight trip to Kuli camp is only possible if road conditions on the dirt track are good. If there is heavy rain or the track is impassable, you will stay at the park HQ and continue to explore Imbak Canyon via treks and night walks.)

Day 3   Kuli Camp – Imbak Canyon (B/L/D)

hours have breakfast at the Kuli Camp. After breakfast depart camp and start trekking along the dirt track back to the park HQ. Board
four-wheel drive vehicles for the last stretch of the journey. Arrive at the park HQ and have lunch. After lunch go to spectacular 39-metre wide Imbak Waterfall. From there trek back through the pristine rainforest to the park HQ. Dinner at the park HQ. After dinner board your 4WD vehicle and depart on a 1-2 hour night drive along one of the tracks in the conservation area (weather permitting). Your guide will use  spotlights to search for nocturnal wildlife in the canopy and along the sides of the track. Some of the species spotting on these night drives include Malay civet cats, Thomas’ and giant red flying squirrels, Sambar deer, Mouse deer and more. Overnight at Imbak Canyon Studies Centre.

Day 4   Imbak Canyon – Sandakan (B)

0600 hours optional dawn birding and wildlife walk. Gibbons are usually heard calling in the mornings near the park HQ. On occasions they are sighted in the forest near the park accommodation. 0730 hours take breakfast at the park HQ. After breakfast depart Imbak Canyon and drive back to Sandakan. Be dropped off at the airport or your hotel.

Note: Itinerary is a rough guide to activities. The programme may change depending on weather, road conditions and any wildlife watching opportunities that present themselves.

We recommended that you arrive in Sandakan the night before the tour. If you wish to arrive in Sandakan on the morningof the tour there are a number of flights that arrive around 0800 hours. You would then need to wait around for 2 hours before the
transfer to Telupid.

If you do not need the transfers from and to Sandakan and wish to make your own way to Telupid, please contact us forthe price. The tour price is cheaper without the Sandakan transfers.
