Labuk Bay & Rainforest Discovery Centre 2D1N

Pickup from Sandakan airport and proceed (30-40 minutes) to Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. This privately run sanctuary is located within an oil palm estate and offers a unique chance to see proboscis monkeys. These monkeys are wild but habituated and often get very close to visitors. The proboscis monkeys at Labuk Bay live in a fragmented habitat surrounded by an oil palm plantation. As there is insufficient food the monkeys receive a supplementary diet. The morning feeding time at Platform A commences at 0930 hours when groups of proboscis monkeys from the nearby forest and mangroves and head to the wooden platform fora free meal. Labuk Bay offers a unique opportunity to get close to these normally shy creatures.   Approx. 1030 hours go to Platform B for ashort visit. A group of silver leaf monkeys are often seen at the shelter at Platform B. Hornbills are sometimes seen in this area. Around 1100 hours depart the sanctuary and transfer to MY Nature Resort in Sepilok. This resort is set in 25 acres of rainforest bordering the Sepilok forest reserve, a protected area rich in wildlife. Check in to your chalet and have lunch at the resort’s restaurant. Then free at leisure to relax or have a swim in the resort’s pool.

1600 hours –  proceed to the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), an education centre located within the Kabili Sepilok Forest Reserve. The focus of this excursion is to experience the rainforest from high and to try and see red giant flying squirrels, which emerge from their nests at dusk. Arrive at the RDC and have a quick look at the visitor information centre before walking to the centre’s 147 metres long canopy walkway, which is up to 28 metres above the forest floor in places. The walkway and towers offer a unique way of seeing Sabah’s rainforest and are an excellent place for bird watching. Over 250 species of birds are found here. Arrive at a spot close to the end of the walkway around 1700 hours and wait. Red giant flying squirrels are nocturnal. The squirrels at the RDC usually emerge between 1800 and 1900 hours when it is getting dark. However, sometimes they appear earlier (around 1700 hours) when it is still light. If they do you will be able to see them glide from tree to tree when there is still enough light to take photos. As darkness falls depart the canopy walkway and return to MY Nature Resort. The exact time of departure from RDC will depend on the wildlife watching opportunities. 0700-0730 hours - dinner at MY Nature Resort. Overnight at MY Nature Resort.

Note: Red giant flying squirrels are also resident within the grounds of MY Nature Resort. The come out almost every night but sightings are not guaranteed. They usually emerge from the nests between 1830 and 1900 hours. If you prefer a more relaxing flying squirrel experience you can opt to stay at the resort instead of going to the RDC canopy walkway.

Breakfast in the resort. Free at leisure to
relax in the resort. If you have a subsequent tour to the Kinabatangan River
(Abai or Sukau), depart the resort at 1100 hours and transfer to the Sandakan
boat jetty to join your Kinabatangan wildlife tour. Otherwise check out and
transfer to the airport.
